When the legendary dancer Vaslav Nijinsky made his first appearance with the Ballets Russes in Paris on May 19, 1909, Modern Ballet was born. And Nijinsky soon became a superstar with Mikhail Fokines choreographies, e.g., Le Pavillon d'Armide, Les Sylphides or Le Spectre de la Rose. Parisians worshipped him, captivated by his extraordinary jumps and his physical presence.
In 2009, the anniversary of Nijinskys legendary appearance is celebrated with various ballet events and exhibitions, but it is only in Hamburg that he is also honored as a graphic artist. John Neumeier, director and chief choreographer, owns the largest private >collection of drawings by Nijinsky worldwide, 85 of which are displayed for the first time at Hamburger Kunsthalle. Annette von Wangenheim talks to the passionate collector and soul heir to Nijinsky.
